GPD, which is short for GamePad Digital, has made PC handheld computers oriented by game and long laptop mini-computer before the valve announced the steam bridge. The company, however, traces its origins to a long-term forgotten period when some companies, including Archos, Sony and even Nvidia, have tried to popularize the idea of an Android Gaming handheld. These may have been ahead of their time before the mobile game has finally become really profitable. GPD could go back to its roots, at least for a brief period and its next GPD-XP is unsurprisingly from the inspiration of the Nintendo switch.

The pocket gaming devices have been around for decades, but the switch has obviously hit an agreement with players. The joy-con controllers of the removable joy of the device and its multiple modes inspired no pictures and accessories to cash this idea. Although there were some game smartphones that followed this path, GPD apparently takes a slightly different route to the same end.

According to XDA, the GPD-XP shares many things similar to a smartphone, like a 6.81-inch screen with an obvious cutting of the perforation hole in the corner. The specifications are unfortunately rather disappointing for a game handheld, with a MediaTek Helios G95 processor, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage. The device has a heavy battery 7,000 mAh and 4G for Internet connectivity, not for calls and SMS.

The unique functionality of GPD-XP is its controls. The left side is apparently fixed and contains an analog stick, a D-pad and three buttons for traditional Android navigation commands. The right side, however, is attached magnetically and can be a more traditional GamePad or a customization specifically designed for MOBA games. In both cases, physical controls can apparently be mapped to touch screen areas, which will be useful for games that do not support the controller.

There is still no word on when GPD plans to start the device, but that will probably do it again on Indiegogo. Certainly, it’s interesting to interest the Android Gaming Handheld’s pocket idea, but it remains to be seen if he has so much call. In addition to modular controllers, there are many smartphones that can do the same and can even make phone calls.
